What is Acupuncture?

The practices of acupuncture has its roots in ancient China, with this system of medicine being thousands of years old. Acupuncture is a key component of Chinese Medicine, which is based on the idea of balancing the body’s natural energy, or Qi (pronounced 'chee'). According to Chinese medicine, Qi flows through pathways in the body called meridians. When this flow is disrupted or blocked, it can lead to discomfort or illness. Balancing qi can be looked at from a Western point of view as helping the body systems achieve optimal function through supporting homeostasis.

The practice of acupuncture involves inserting fine, sterile, single use needles into specific points along these meridians to restore balance, improve the flow of Qi, and support the body’s natural healing processes. The needles used are thin, some roughly the width of a human hair. Over the centuries, acupuncture has evolved and integrated with modern research, making it both a time-tested and evidence-based method for promoting health and wellness.

What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?

Chinese herbal medicine is a key part of Chinese Medicine and, with acupuncture, has been used for thousands of years to restore and maintain health. It is based on the idea that the body, mind, and environment are interconnected, and it seeks to address the root causes of imbalances rather than just treating symptoms.

Chinese herbal formulas are typically made from a combination of plant-based ingredients, such as roots, bark, leaves, and seeds, along with minerals and occasionally animal products. Each herb is chosen for its specific properties, and the combinations are carefully tailored to suit your unique health needs.

The goal is to support the body’s natural healing processes by strengthening internal systems, addressing imbalances, and promoting harmony. Herbal medicine can be used on its own or in combination with other treatments, like acupuncture, for a more comprehensive approach to wellness.

Angelique Britt, RN, MAc.CHM, Lic.Ac., Dipl. O.M. (NCCAOM)

Angelique is a registered nurse with over 20 years of clinical experience. Graduating with a BSN from UMass, Amherst in 2003, Angelique spent the majority of her nursing career working in the specialties of oncology and hospice, with hospice holding a particularly special place in her heart. Most recently, she has worked in mental health and feels especially drawn to helping those who are struggling with their mental and emotional well being.

She always felt there was a ‘missing piece’ to the current healthcare paradigm, and upon discovering Chinese Medicine, her journey to find the missing piece began. She enrolled at the New England School of Acupuncture (NESA) and graduated with a Masters in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine. At NESA she was honored with “The Compassionate Healer Award” for “high level clinical skill in addition to creating a safe, sure and trusting environment for patients”. She was also chosen for the “Earth Element Award” for embodying the qualities of being “nurturing, centered, stable, hardworking, advocate and creative”. She believes there is space for all medicine, Eastern and Western; that it should not be an ‘either/or’ decision for the patient, but a ‘both/and’ based on what each individual needs to have the best quality of life.

Angelique is board certified in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. She practices Traditional Chinese, Orthopedic and Sa’am styles of acupuncture. Currently, Angelique is completing her Doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine at Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical Arts as well as White Pine Institute’s Graduate Mentorship Program in Classical Chinese Herbal Medicine.

What Should I Expect At An Acupuncture Treatment?

The approach we take is individualized and based on the Chinese Medicine and/or Sa’am methodology of assessing signs and symptoms. We do not provide a Western diagnosis, but we do incorporate information from Western medicine into our assessment. Please bring any medical records you may have, as well as an up to date medication list. We take a biopsychosocial approach to your care, working with you to set goals for your treatment plan based on your preferences, lifestyle, and personal needs.

Treatments are private.

Initial visits last 80 minutes and include a lengthy intake discussion that helps create the foundation of care. The practitioner will take your vital signs, just as you would have done at your primary care. They will also check the pulses on both wrists and take a look at your tongue. In Chinese medicine, the tongue and pulse provide vital diagnostic information.

Following this intake, you will rest on massage-style table, and the practitioner will treat you with acupuncture. While you are resting, if desired, a Chinese herbal formula will be prepared for you to take home. Together, we will decide on a treatment plan that is best for you. This includes goals of care, approximate number of treatments anticipated, and how often you should come for a treatment.

Followup visits last 50 minutes and include a brief intake followed by treatment.

*Before coming to an acupuncture treatment, please be sure to have eaten at least one meal that day. Patients are encouraged to wear loose fitting clothing for treatments or to bring shorts and a T-shirt with them.
